Google Adsense

Targeted advertising from the biggest search engine

Brief Summary
The web pages are designed to accept Google Adsense - which is absolutely free.   If you insert some text on a web page, Google will automatically read the page content – and insert an appropriate advert. So if your page talks about travel insurance, the Adsense system will insert adverts relating to travel insurance. If it talks about hotels or car hire, Adsense will insert adverts relating to those items.

If someone then sees that page and clicks on one of the adverts – you earn money. The amount could vary from 10 cents to $5, depending on how much advertisers are prepared to pay to receive an enquiry. Clearly, if you populate your site with articles about subjects that generate a high “click” amount from associated adverts, you will make more profit.

Remember – they only have to click on the advert on your page, they don’t actually have to buy anything!

As a minimum, we would expect the income from Adsense on a completed site to easily cover your annual fee - but some sites can expect income in the $000’s.

More Adsense detail
Google uses its Internet search technology to insert advertisements based on website content, the user's geographical location and other factors. AdSense has become a popular method of placing advertising on a website because the advertisements are less intrusive than most banners and the content of the advertisements is more relevant to the website.

Currently, AdSense uses JavaScript code to incorporate the advertisements into a participating website. AdSense has been particularly important for delivering advertising revenue to small websites that do not have the resources for developing advertising sales programmes and sales people. To fill a website with advertisements that are relevant to the topics discussed, owners insert a brief script on the website’s pages.

Some business owners invest significant effort into increasing their AdSense income. They do this in three ways:

* They use a wide range of traffic-generating techniques, including but not limited to online advertising.

* They build valuable content on their websites that attracts those AdSense advertisements which pay out the most when they are clicked.

* They use text content on their websites that encourages visitors to click on advertisements. Note that Google prohibits webmasters from using phrases like "Click on my AdSense ads" to increase click rates. The phrases accepted are "Sponsored Links" and "Advertisements".

The source of all AdSense income is the AdWords programme, which in turn has a complex pricing model based on a Vickrey second price auction. AdSense commands an advertiser to submit a sealed bid (i.e. a bid not observable by competitors). Additionally, for any given click received, advertisers only pay one bid increment above the second-highest bid.

Websites that are content-rich have been very successful with Adsense, as noted in a number of published case studies on the AdSense website.
